Proper safety training remains an issue in the roofing industry

A Pie Insurance survey of more than 1,000 full- or part-time workers at businesses with 500 or fewer employees shows nearly 60% of small-business employees have witnessed a workplace injury during the past year and about 50% of those injuries were considered preventable, according to Safety+Health magazine.

The survey also found the following:

  • Two-thirds of respondents have ongoing safety concerns at work but 17% are hesitant to report them.
  • Forty-four percent of workers do not know how to report an injury, and 65% do not know how to file a workers’ compensation claim.
  • Only 29% of workers said they regularly receive safety training, while 63% of employers say they provide structured training.
  • Twenty-eight percent of workers said they have never received formal safety training.
  • Thirty-two percent of workers said mental health is their top safety and health concern, followed by physical injury (20%), environmental hazards (9%) and equipment safety (4%).
